A Dragon Comes to School

If you thought that dragons only graced the hallowed halls of Hogwarts, think again! On Thursday afternoon, the pupils of primary 7 had an unexpected visit from a home-grown and now internationally renowned dragon in the guise of entrepreneur Mr Peter Casey, he of Dragon’s Den fame.

A Derry native, Peter now lives in Atlanta but spends much of his time travelling around the globe developing his ever increasing and varied business empire. Although he spends much of his time in exotic and far-flung locations, he never lost his love of home and returns each month to his beautiful shore-side home in Greencastle.

Despite the demands of his jam-packed diary, Peter makes time to visit schools and third level institutions, encouraging a spirit of entrepreneurialism in students and giving sagely advice (with a liberal peppering of wit!) based on his own journey through the world of business development and investment.

When he heard that our primary7 pupils were about to embark on their own Junior Dragons project, he readily and generously agreed to give them a few words of well-seasoned advice during a thirty minute whistle-stop tour as he was expected in Dublin at 6.00 p.m. However, at quarter to three he was still dealing with the pupils’ probing questions! Peter was impressed by the maturity of our pupils and predicted glittering business careers for many of them. Just as well as about two thirds of them raised their hands when asked if they’d like to be rich! As a school, we are deeply grateful to Peter for injecting a little bit of star quality into the launch of our project.

Fired up with enthusiasm following Peter’s presentation, the boys and girls are now full steam ahead with the Junior Dragons project. In groups they will now formulate business plans, pitch for investment, design, make and advertise products and sell these at a craft fair which will be held after Easter. If any parent who is involved in business would be prepared to assist in any way with this project, their input would be very much appreciated.
